Before any mole removal surgery the area around mole will be cleaned and sterilized. Local anesthesia will be applied to numb the mole area. Method used for mole removal surgery will depend on your mole.
Excision method will be used for potentially cancerous moles. The mole and tissue surrounding it will be removed using surgical blade and stitches will be applied over the hole surface. Cauterization that involves no stitches is suitable for flat moles. The mole will be burned away using a tool that operates on electricity. Shaving method is reserved for protruding, non cancerous moles. If done on atypical moles, they can grow back as mole cells left embedded in surgery site tend to regenerate after some time. Scalpel method is basically scraping flat mole that are not so dark till the marks are gone. Then, cauterization will be performed to stop bleeding. Stitches will not be necessary for this too. However, patient may need the area to be bandaged to avoid exposure to infection.
Amount of pain during healing process depends on the surgical method. To aid recovery, the area should be cleaned twice a day with water or diluted hydrogen peroxide and then treated with antibiotic ointment. Some wounds should be kept covered until healed. During this time, a scab develops but drops off. Then the challenge of handling scarring possibilities occurs. Some scars just fade away but for those stubborn ones, skin resurfacing or other scar removal procedures can be done.
The cost of mole removal surgery can vary around $125-$150 excluding the anesthesia, operating room facility or any other associated costs. As medical insurance do not cover this, financing options are usually offered by the surgeons themselves.
Mole removal surgery may help those in favor of quick and effective solutions. But save it as your last option as it not only costs a lot but also requires great risk.
